Devon Dixon - Figure Competitor

I grew up a student athlete and was always very active. During college I got into a very serious relationship that turned very abusive. In 2013 I was supposed to be out of town with my boyfriend for his brothers birthday but we had gotten into an argument the night before that left me with a broken nose and a black eye... needless to say I wasn't allowed to go. So he went out of town and I got online and saw the Flex Lewis Classic was in town, I had never been to a competition but thought it would be fun so I asked my parents to go with me. As soon as I walked in the doors I knew that is what I wanted to do. I was amazed at the way everyone looked and the complete confidence everyone had. At that very moment I decided one day I would be on that stage, and here we are 5 years later I did my first competition at the Flex Lewis Classic and am now Nationally Qualified!

Diet: Off season and pre contest are very similar yet very different. The food is essentially the same thing but different portion size. While in off season I consume more fats (peanut butter, avocado, almonds) and Carbs (Sweet potatoes, white rice, oatmeal). I train the same in and off season but pre contest I will add more cardio.

There is no set diet that just anyone can follow and it work perfectly. Everyone is different and each food group effects everyone differently. For example while some people may do well with high glycemic carbs others may be able to process low glycemic better. I tried all the cookie cutter, fad diets out there and it wasn't until I started eating whole clean foods that I started seeing results.

Self confidence takes work. Especially after the situation I was in I had slim to no confidence. You have to surround yourself with people who are going to build you up and believe in you. You have to cut out all negativity and jealousy because at the end of the day that is going to bring you down and make you second guess yourself. When you set a goal give it your all, 100% all the time.

I lift 6 days a week year round and the amount of cardio depends on what season I am in. Of course I coordinate my diet and training. High carb days I will do legs.

I recently competed in the Flex Lewis Classic last weekend and had the time of my life! I can't even put into words all of the feelings I felt all weekend. When I first got there I was eager to check in, pretty much hurry up to wait LOL the adrenaline is rushing. Pre Judging was the same way I was so eager to get on stage. We went through our quarter turns and then I heard the judges call my number and placed me in the center of the stage, this feelings was incredible, when I got off stage I don't like I stopped smiling for hours.. needless to say my cheeks hurt. By the time finals came around I was MEGA THIRSTY as I had to stay dry all day but I knew the judging was over and I had a ton of friends and family there to support me so it was time to strut my stuff and have FUN.

Being an athlete affects everything you do. Between planning vacations around prep, going out to eat with friends when you're allotted a cheat meal, and so much more. But that's the beauty of this sport it's not just a 12 week prep, it's a LIFESTYLE.

Future plans for me...... PATH TO PRO CARD. Next year I will be competing at USAs in July.
