Kristin Nissen - Bikini Competitor

I started to compete earlier this year. The reason I wanted to begin competing was because I am someone who constantly likes to push myself to the limit and see how far I can go. My love of weight training and a healthy lifestyle made this decision a no brainer! I stepped on stage and instantly fell in love.

My off-season diet was fairly flexible. I ate clean and often and had weekly cheat meals. Once my pre-contest diet began, it was a different ballgame. I then went into a strict six meals a day with two to three hours in between each meal. My first competition prep was not a normal one. I opted for a six-week prep because it was a last minute decision. This decision resulted in a much stricter diet due to the amount of time I had to prep compared to a normal competition prep.

My training program incorporates lifting, minimal Cardio, and some HIIT. I train anywhere from 5-6 days a week. Training and diet go hand-in-hand. Without the right diet to fuel my body, I will run on empty and the training will just be a waste. You can train as hard and as long as you want, but if you just feed yourself garbage, you will never see the results you desire.

I was never one of those girls who oozed self confidence. I truly believe that the transformation and grueling training that occurs during a competition prep gives you the self-confidence to strut on stage. The hard work and discipline involved in my competition prep was like no other and the moment I stepped on stage, I wanted nothing more than to show off my hard work to the entire world!

My last show could not have gone any smoother. Athlete Check-Inís made me extremely nervous, but when I showed up everyone was more than helpful and gave great direction. My nerves were instantly settled after that. After I checked in, it was time for a spray tan. I was nervous about showing my goods to a complete stranger, but the staff was completely professional. I actually forgot what was going on for a moment due to the great conversation that took place during the tan.

The morning of the show came and I could only get about four hours of sleep due to excitement. I had to start my hair and make up at 5:30 AM so I was up before the sun. The staff who did my hair and make up were awesome! It was really nice to be pampered after weeks and weeks of hard training. Prejudging went very smooth. I found it hilarious that I didnít feel nervous, but my cheeks were shaking like crazy while trying to smile at the judges. I ended up placing walking away that day with a 4th place win, two 2nd place wins, and a 1st place win in Open class! I rewarded myself that night with a doughnut, burger and fries. The following morning I decided to hit the gym after sleeping in! :)

Being an athlete brings a balance to my life. When I have my meals prepped, my gym time scheduled in, and goals in place, everything else just seems to fall into place. The gym is my happy place and being an athlete is a lifestyle.

Right now I am focused on my next show, which is about four weeks away. After that, I am going to shoot for a National show early 2018 following a much needed offseason.
