* You worked as a model at Ford for a long time. How did your experiences
as a model help you as America's Next Top Model judge?
Nigel Barker: I often consider one of my greatest advantages as a photographer is the fact that I know exactly what it is like to be the subject too. When I ask a model to do something or feel a certain way I try to remember what it was like for me and the things I did or didn't like to do. On ANTM I have to critique and guide these young girls so the fact that I once was in their shoes (well I never wore stilettos!) certainly helps qualify me for the job. |

I actually started modeling through a televised model search in the
UK called the "Clothes Show". A sort of early version of ANTM. I have since
done a full circle and am now the judge. Bottom line is that I know how
successful a winner can be given half a chance.
* The fashion industry changes very often. What were you looking for then, at the first seasons? and now? Nigel Barker: A winner... no really a face that sticks out, one that you remember and a personality that you can embrace and hopefully identify with. There are 4 permanent judges and one guest judge every week. We have our fingers on the pulse of the industry and try to come to a common decision on an intangible subject - beauty. Personality however is a bit more easy to define, so we look to see out of our group of finalists who has that winning combination of face, walk and talk. * In what way does the pressure during the seasons of America's Next Top Model change the girls? Nigel Barker: Well the expression "Only the strongest survive" has never rung truer! Being at the top of your game is not easy and maintaining that level is even harder. Being a Top Model or celebrity and staying there is just as hard. So the pressure of the show is good training for whomever wins - and it certainly makes for entertaining telly! * How do you think the girls would describe you as a judge? Nigel Barker: Hopefully as their favorite.... I try to be honest and constructive and shy away from the dramatics for entertainments sake. I really enjoy shooting the girls every season and get the opportunity to meet them in a working environment. That is also a good chance for the girls to see me put my money where my mouth is. * You have completed a very unique cycle: Model - successful Photographer - Judge. What is your favorite experience so far? Nigel Barker: Husband and father. I just had a little boy with my beautiful and talented wife Cristen. I met her as a model and we work together still as photographer and make up artist - her new career. It was photographing my wife that really inspired and enthused me with a career in photography. Enjoying what one does is always a bonus so I have been very lucky in life and in love. * Do you have a few tips for aspiring models? Nigel Barker: Believe in yourself and be courteous yet confident, the rest is really up to your genes and what mother nature has in store for you. Watch the show!
